The Evolution of Ford’s Blue Oval

Ford-Logos-Combined-e1601314811556Company logos are often the first impression the public has of a company. They are often the most recognizable part of a company’s branding message, even more so than slogans or spokespeople, according to an article “50 Company Logos, Then and Now” by Madison Troyer on Stacker.com

“Company logos are synonymous with a favorite product or experience,” states the article. “Logos can signify a product to consumers with no need to convey any additional information.”

One of the companies featured in the article is the Ford Motor Company. Incorporated in 1903, Ford’s logo has evolved dramatically over time, much like its vehicles. It was a rocky start, as the company  had spent nearly all of its $28,000 in savings by the time it sold the first Model A. Ford’s fortunes turned around quickly when just three months later it had turned a $37,000 profit.

Ford’s original signature-like logo was unveiled in 1907. Designed by Ford’s first chief engineer/designer Childe Harold Wills, the logo used the calligraphy from his own business card as its foundation. The oval was added in 1912. To celebrate its 100th year in business in 2003, Ford did a major update with brighter colors and 3D shading.

While changing a logo may not affect a company’s core business or offerings, it can definitely affect the way consumers view them and how easily they’re recognized.
