May 23, 2020

2020 ford mustang vs 2019 ford mustang

As the Ford Mustang hits the sixth year of its sixth generation, the 2020 Mustang is bringing some exciting changes to the vehicle to get drivers excited to upgrade to the latest version. With the 2020 Mustang already released earlier this year, drivers have now hit the road with the new and improved Mustang.

Though much of the car has stayed the same, there have been some minor but helpful tweaks to already-popular models. There has also been the inclusion of an entirely new high-performance-oriented package and GT model. If you’re in the market for a new Mustang, you may want to better understand the 2019 Mustang changes learn more about how much the 2020 Mustang has to offer.

To make an informed decision, you should know everything about the new unique features, color options, performance specs, packages and pricing differences between the 2020 and 2019 Ford Mustangs.

2019 to 2020 Color Changes

With a new year and a new Mustang, there’s going to be some new colors. The fresh 2020 Mustang colors include Twister Orange, Rapid Red, Grabber Lime and Iconic Silver.  For those looking to be on the cutting edge, these colors will be effective at differentiating your 2020 Mustang from the 2019 version.

Along with the new colors, there are some that are being retired. If you’re looking for exterior colors: Need for Green, Ruby Red, Orange Fury or Ingot Silver you’re out of luck with the 2020 models as those colors have been discontinued. There are some colors remaining, however, with Oxford White, Race Red, Magnetic, Shadow Black, Kona Blue, Dark Highland Green and Velocity Blue all still available for both 2019 and 2020 models.

Though there are many new exterior colors, there aren’t any changes to the interior color options. For the 2019 Mustang, people had the option of purchasing Tan, Midnight Blue, Ebony, Ceramic, Dark Ceramic and Showstopper Red. In 2020, drivers can find the same interior color choices.

FordPass Connect Standard on the 2020 Mustang

Though the 2019 Ford Mustang had FordPass Connect capabilities, the feature didn’t come standard on all vehicles. If your vehicle wasn’t originally set up for FordPass Connect, you’d probably need to take your car in to get the system installed. Having to go through all these steps was too high a barrier of entry for many drivers, with many not accessing the powerful features associated with it.

To inform your Mustang 2020 vs. 2019 decision, know that the Mustang 2020 improves on its predecessor by making the FordPass Connect standard in all vehicles. This means drivers don’t have to take any extra steps to start using the service, making it easier for drivers to begin taking advantage of its powerful tools.

The FordPass app gives you a variety of features that will improve your Mustang experience

What Does FordPass Do for Mustang Owners?

When you hook up the FordPass app to FordPass Connect, you’ll gain a variety of features that improve your Mustang experience. With the app, you can start your vehicle remotely or schedule a time of day for your car to regularly turn on, letting you get into a cool car on a hot summer day or into a warm car when it’s freezing out.

Other features include a lock and unlock feature, where you can lock your doors no matter how far you are from the vehicle. Additionally, the app can help you plan ahead by checking the vehicle’s vitals, like how many miles until the car needs its next service, its fuel level and its total mileage. Finally, never lose your vehicle again by using the Vehicle Locator feature that automatically saves your vehicle’s location when you turn it off.

With these benefits and more, FordPass Connect makes the 2020 Mustangs that much more attractive to potential buyers, removing any hassle of having to get it installed in earlier 2019 models.

Power Passenger Seats

A smaller change that might be worth noting if you regularly drive with passengers in the car is the change from six-way power passenger seats in the 2019 model to four-way power passenger seats in the 2020 Mustang. By moving to four-way power passenger seats, the 2020 Mustang’s seats can’t be adjusted as much as the 2019 Mustang’s seats.

Though it’s not a huge change, drivers who are particular about their passenger seats probably want to be aware that the 2020 Mustang doesn’t have as many seating capabilities as the previous year’s model.

In addition to the reduced power options for the 2020 Mustang seats, the newest Mustang also doesn’t have seatback map pockets standard anymore. The only model they come standard with is the Mustang Bullitt Model.

New Wheel Options for the 2020 Mustang

The 2020 Mustang comes with three new wheel options. If you love to customize your exterior down to the last detail, you’ll love the diversity in appearance that these three wheels offer:

  • 17″ wheel: Coming standard on the 100A model, the 17-inch wheel is painted spark silver and is an excellent new addition.
  • 19″ aluminum wheel: The premium painted 19-inch aluminum wheel comes with the EcoBoost® Handling Package. You can get this package only if you’ve already picked the High-Performance Package.
  • 19″ machined-face aluminum: The High-Performance Package brings with it a 19-inch machined-face aluminum wheel that also has ebony painted, low gloss pockets.

EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium

The specs and features of the 2019 Ford Mustang EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium models carry over to the 2020 models. The main difference will be FordPass Connect coming standard with the vehicle. You can still expect to receive the same basic power and features from 2019 and 2020 models. For example, the standard EcoBoost still has a rating of 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.

Additionally, the popular Wheel and Stripe package is largely unchanged, but it does now give either model the chance to add a hood stripe. If you select EcoBoost Premium, you’ll also be able to add the Carbon Sports package or Pony Package to the vehicle.

Those familiar with the 2019 Mustang EcoBoost models might be wondering why the Performance Package hasn’t been included in the discussion of the EcoBoost models. The truth is, the Performance Package has been laid to rest. But don’t fret — even though you no longer have access to the package or the MagneRide option, you’re getting something better in its place — the High-Performance EcoBoost and EcoBoost Handling Packages.

The 2020 Mustang features a 2.4L high performance EcoBoost engine

2020 Mustang High-Performance EcoBoost Available

Perhaps one of the biggest 2020 Mustang changes is the offering of the new High-Performance EcoBoost. High-Performance EcoBoost provides so many new features that it’s almost like you’re getting an entirely different Mustang. The performance is so improved that your driving experience will go from fun to exhilarating.

High-Performance EcoBoost essentially replaces and improves on the Performance Package for the 2019 Mustang. One of the biggest additions is a 2.4L High-Performance EcoBoost engine that clocks in at 350 ft-lb of torque and 330 horsepower. Some of the other novel features include:

  • Active valve performance exhaust
  • 3.55 limited-slip rear axle
  • Engine-spun aluminum instrument panel
  • Strut-tower brace that’s painted black
  • GT Performance Package belly pan and front spiller
  • Exterior mirror in Magnetic
  • Accent stripe for the hood
  • Large radiator
  • Gauge Pack
  • Performance rear wing
  • Unique chassis tuning
  • Upsized rear sway bar
  • Large brake rotors that feature four-piston fixed calipers
  • Unique stability control tuning, ABS and EPAS

As mentioned previously, you also receive 19″ x 9″ machined-face aluminum wheels and FordPass Connect functionality. To get this package, you’ll have to pay a little under $5,000.

The EcoBoost Handling Package

If you go with High-Performance EcoBoost, you have the option to add the new EcoBoost Handling Package to improve the Mustang even more. The package starts by adding an aluminum 19″ x 9.5″ wheel and a MagneRide Damping System. Additionally, you get a 3.55 Torsen limited-slip rear axle and premium brakes. This extra handling can be had for just under $2,000.

Other Mustang Packages

For those interested in the new Mustang 2020, you’ll need to be aware of the top features available to the 2020 Mustang. Some of these packages were largely available for the 2019 Mustang, but those interested in receiving the best features for their Mustang should still be aware of the packages that carried over into the 2020 lineup and any changes made to them:

Pony Package

If you have an EcoBoost Premium Mustang that doesn’t have the High-Performance Package, you’ll be able to add the Pony Package to your vehicle. Below, you can find some of the features included in this package:

  • A white or ebony side stripe
  • Bright upper grille
  • 19″ polished aluminum wheels
  • Tri-bar pony badge
  • Window surround and bright beltline

The 2020 Ford Mustang features safe and smart packages with many features

Safe and Smart Package

Available for any Mustang, the Safe and Smart Package is ready to deliver the safest Mustang to date. The suite of driver-assistance features is par none, but even if you don’t select the package, any package you select will still give you 911 assist and a reverse sensing system. If you select the Safe and Smart Package, you’ll receive even more features, including:

  • Pre-collision assist
  • Lane-keeping system
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Auto high beam
  • Adaptive cruise control

California Special Package

The California Special is one of the most coveted packages for the Mustang. For the 2020 Mustang, it can only be included with Premium GTS. Some of the features of the package include California special rear badging, instrument panel badges and a strut tower brace. Additionally, buyers receive Miko suede seats and door inserts. The floor mats also receive red contrast stitching and California special script to help put a special mark on the interior.

The only new feature of the California Special package is the addition of Velocity Blue to replace the previous Kona Blue.

2019 vs. 2020 Ford Mustang GT

For those who want top-of-the-line performance and power, the GT350 and GT500 are the Mustangs for you. Of all the Mustang 2020 changes, the GT500 offers the most, as it’s the first GT500 available in this generation of Mustangs.

Find out which GT model is best for you below:

GT350

The GT350 is one of the most popular versions of the Mustang. In 2019, it continued to add to its reputation as a premium performance vehicle, with Ford first upgrading its tires. The super sticky Pilot Sport Cup 2s are still available in 2020, and it runs on a familiar Voodoo engine. As a flat-plane V8, the engine puts out some serious power and sound.

New features of the GT350 are relatively small. The car now comes standard with FordPass Connect, delivering greater driver assistance features to users, as well as allowing the car to turn into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Besides FordPass Connect, it also comes with a new color palette for the exterior, with all of the colors listed previously being offered for the GT350 as well.

GT500

For those who want a total 2020 Mustang redesign, the GT500 is going to be the Mustang for you. The new GT500 is the first GT500 to be featured in the S550 generation. It doesn’t waste the opportunity to make an impression, with many drivers already turning to it. If you’re looking for a Mustang that gives you the feeling of a muscle car, you’ll want to check out the GT500.

The Mustang comes with a variant of a Voodo engine named the Predator, which utilizes a cross-plane crankshaft. The engine delivers a rumble that’s commonly associated with the sound of a muscle car. The GT500’s engine doesn’t just sound good, but it also adds a great deal of horsepower, even more than the High-Performance Package you can purchase for the standard Ford Mustang. The model clocks in at an impressive 760hp.

Other than the horsepower, a main feature of the Mustang GT500 is its dual-clutch transmission, which is a departure from the more traditional manual. Some users will miss the shift knob and third pedal that would have come with a manual transmission. That being said, drivers will still be able to switch gears with paddle shifters.

Of all the changes 2020 is bringing to the Ford Mustang, the addition of the GT500 is probably the most exciting development. As a result of the value it provides to drivers in the form of horsepower and eye-catching design, it’s going to cost you more than most Mustang models, coming in at just under $74,000.
