C1 Model Year Comparison

We sell C1 door panels that showcase all the subtle differences between the first-generation Corvettes.

1953

The 1953 Corvette is one of the rarest and most sought-after Corvettes. It had an extremely limited production run of 300 units, and we know of only about 225 of those that still exist today.

The 1953 model established the signature Corvette design. Some notable features included a convertible-style, fiberglass body with a chrome grille, rounded headlights and classic 1950s protruding taillights. What’s more, all 1953 models had the iconic Polo White exterior paint and Sportsman Red interior with a collapsible, black top. Under the hood was a six-cylinder engine nicknamed the “Blue Flame.”

1954

The 1954 Corvette had an expanded production run of just over 3,600 units. This release offered greater engine power than the 1953 model, and it was also available in more colors, including Black and Pennant Blue. There were minimal design changes between the 1953 and 1954 models.

1955

The 1955 model received one of the most significant upgrades with the introduction of a V8 engine, which helped the Corvette achieve sports car status. Other distinctive features of these models include a broader chrome grille and three-speed manual transmission.

1956

The 1956 model featured a redesigned exterior with the addition of its signature coves, exposed headlamps, a removable hardtop and a curved, contoured taillight design. The V8 engine also featured an impressive 240 horsepower for this model.

1957

1957 Corvettes benefited from more advanced technology, including fuel injection and a limited-slip differential. It was also the last year that Polo White was an exterior paint option.

1958

1958 Corvettes showcased substantial design changes. They featured a new four-headlight configuration with two headlights on each side, faux louvers on the hood and unique chrome accents on the trunk. The interior got a new instrument cluster, which situated the tachometer directly in front of the driver.

1959

The 1959 model offered a cleaned-up version of the 1958 Corvette, as the faux louvers and a few chrome details were absent. They introduced sun visors in 1959, and it was also the only year a turquoise soft top was available.

1960

The 1960 Corvette featured aluminum radiators and the rarest factory paint color: Cascade Green. Otherwise, its design was nearly indistinguishable from the 1959 model.

1961

The 1961 Corvette went through another restyling, with the most pronounced change being its new rear-end design. Nicknamed the “ducktail” design by Corvette enthusiasts, the style echoed the car’s headlights with two taillights on each side of the vehicle.

1962

The last of its generation, the 1962 Corvette featured a cleaner, more cohesive look across its body. Corvette eliminated the chrome outlines that framed the coves, and you could no longer have the coves painted a different color than the rest of the car.
